Roy Receives NSF CAREER Award

Sudeepa Roy has received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "CAREER: FIREFLY - Rich Explanations for Database Queries." Total funding will be $550,000 over 5 years. This award will support Roy's research into providing automatic explanations to help a range of people harness Big Data more efficiently. Alice Workshop 2016 Led by Rodger

A two-week Adventures in Alice Programming workshop to teach K-12 teachers how to program and to integrate programming into their disciplines was held. It was led by Prof. Susan Rodger, teacher Chari Distler, and Duke undergraduates Carolyn Sun, Ademola Olayinka (U) and Anh Trinh (U). Randles Joins Faculty

We welcome Amanda Randles, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, as secondary faculty. Randles is a CS alumna (BA,'05). Rodger Reappointed

Susan Rodger has been reappointed as Professor of the Practice (PoP) of Computer Science. Rodger has been with the department since 1994. She has played a key role in shaping the CS undergraduate experience through her teaching, advising, and mentoring. Recipient of the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator award, she is a nationally recognized figure in computer science education. Konidaris Receives DARPA Young Faculty Award

George Konidaris is the winner of a Young Faculty Award (YFA) from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The YFA aims to provide high-impact fundung to exceptional junior faculty in the first few years of their appointment. Roy Joins Faculty

CS is delighted to welcome Sudeepa Roy as an assistant professor. Roy comes to us from the University of Washington where she was a postdoctoral researcher in the database group. Roy received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania where she was the recipient of a Google Ph.D. Fellowship in Structured Data. She grew up in Kolkata, India, and earned her master's and bachelor's degrees in Computer Science in India from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and Jadavpur University, respectively.
