CS is delighted to welcome Sudeepa Roy as an assistant professor. Roy comes to us from the University of Washington where she was a postdoctoral researcher in the database group. Roy received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania where she was the recipient of a Google Ph.D. Fellowship in Structured Data. She grew up in Kolkata, India, and earned her master's and bachelor's degrees in Computer Science in India from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and Jadavpur University, respectively.
Roy's research focuses on foundational aspects of big data analysis and developing new tools and techniques for this purpose. Her current work on causality and explanations for databases aims to assist users get deep insights into data by providing rich explanations to their questions. She is also interested in data provenance, probabilistic databases, and crowdsourcing to probe into fundamental questions that need to be answered to enable end-to-end processing and analysis of unstructured, noisy, and unreliable data in today's world.
Roy is currently teaching an advanced graduate-level course in databases focusing on classical and new techniques for data analysis, and plans to teach other regular graduate and undergraduate courses in databases in the future.
