The Artificial Intelligence group in the Department of Computer Science is dedicated to advancing research that spans the theoretical foundations of AI, the principles and methods of machine learning, and the development of practical applications that address real-world challenges. By combining rigorous theoretical work on neural networks, probabilistic learning, discrete and continuous optimization, and causal learning with the development of transparent, trustworthy, and scalable machine learning models, the group investigates areas including interpretable AI, reinforcement learning, large-scale generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, drug design, societal decision-making, ethical AI, and human-centered AI systems. We aim to push the frontiers of machine learning while maintaining transparency, fairness, and interpretability as foundational principles.
